They smile. They play soccer. They’re captivated when they watch our science demonstrations.

And as they learn how to build a DNA model with gummy bears or play Operation for the first time, their eyes twinkle with wonder.

I’m not just talking about the children—I'm also talking about their grandmothers!

My name is Karin Rudman, and I’m a Materials Science Engineer at Medtronic, where we manufacture medical technology.

I am originally from Venezuela, and I came to the United States 16 years ago to earn my PhD.

Living here on my own was difficult at first. I didn’t know anybody, except my research partner.

Figuring out the bus schedules and getting used to a different country was challenging. That’s why once I reached my goals, I wanted to help others reach theirs, especially people like me.

Today, I belong to the Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers and the Hispanic Latino Network. Both in and out of the office, I’ve mentored engineering students and young professionals, sharing the wisdom and knowledge I’ve acquired over the years.

But one of the most meaningful ways I give back is by collaborating with Chicanos Por La Causa to coordinate holiday volunteering opportunities for Medtronic employees. Each year, we come together to stuff Christmas stockings and host a booth with games and giveaways at CPLC’s annual Ángeles del Barrio holiday events.

As my colleagues and I volunteer, we are very conscious that this may be the only opportunity for these families to celebrate the holidays.

When you think of a toy drive, the last people who come to mind are probably grandmothers. But each year, my colleagues and I love interacting with them!

It’s because Ángeles del Barrio is not just for children.

These events impact the whole family: when the children get a present, their parents can breathe a sigh of relief, because we’re removing some of that financial pressure. And the grandparents—who’ve done so much for their families all their lives—are happy to receive a little attention and see that we care about them, too.

Seeing the smiles of the people—both volunteers and attendees—is priceless. And it’s so easy to make a child smile. You invest a little, and the impact is huge.

That’s why I’m proud to volunteer with CPLC. I admire their adaptability and how they truly help people in our community.

From personal experience, I know it’s always worth investing our time and resources in others—be it with a new colleague, an engineering intern, a curious child, or even a grandmother!

That’s how we continue growing, united, to build a place where we belong together—no matter where we come from or where we’re going.

Happy holidays,

Karin Rudman
