                          CAREER DEVELOPMENT INSTITUTE:

“Eres el arquitecto de tu propio destino”
(You are the architect of your own destiny)

Chicanos Por La Causa has been at the forefront of creating opportunities and creating innovative environments that promote the empowerment of the Latino community for over 42 years.

In 2004, the CPLC Career Development Institute was established and is dedicated to bringing together members of the corporate community, business leaders and Latino and Non-Latino managers to accelerate their upward growth and development by providing culturally relevant management training.

In order to succeed and move into upper management, Latinos need a continuous learning process that is not taught in business schools or other traditional educational institutions. To reach their chosen career, Latinos must often overcome barriers that are ambiguous and hidden in order to gain a competitive advantage in the workplace. The institute focuses on Latino culture and the advantages and challenges that include such things as organizational cultures, management styles, relationship building, stereotyping, unwritten work rules and expectations, informal networks, information gaps, office politics, alignment and work behaviors. Too often, Latinos recognize these areas of difference too late and unknowingly damage their entry into upper management.

The Institute provides practical advice and instructional guidance to help Latinos understand the factors needed for success and hurdle their way through their careers by creating their own roadmap for management growth and development.

The three-day curriculum accelerates the learning process of participants by utilizing traditional cultural sayings (dichos) to help bridge Latino life learning’s and the world of work. Emphasis is placed on how these learning’s are an advantage and how they apply to the role of management.

Utilizing interactive self-assessment, feedback sessions, teamwork and individual dialogue and exercises the institute offers Latino and Non-Latino managers insights and training on:

  • The future of Latinos in a changing world
  • Perceptions of Latino managers
  • Qualities of managers that lead to success
  • Latino career challenges and opportunities
  • Effectiveness in managing people
  • Managing diversity and organizational change
  • Organizational cultures, alignment and management styles
  • Preparation, communication and presentation
  • Visioning, strategic thinking and planning
  • Dynamics of team building
  • Qualities of leadership
  • Decision making skills
  • Advantages of functioning in social environments
  • Marketing your strengths
  • Effective relationship building, circles of influence and networking
  • Interviewing skill building
  • Personal and career plan development
  • Negotiating your career
Successful Latino executives are an integral part of the history of Chicanos Por La Causa and volunteered to provide their personal insights and professional advice through taped vignettes that supplement the learning process. Additionally senior executives with more than 30 years of management experience facilitate the training.

Each participant will develop a personal and professional career development plan as an outcome of the training. Utilizing a pre-assessment and post assessment process, participants and supervisors will help set individual attainment goals and monitor progress for twelve months upon completion of the training.

All participants receive a “Puntos de Oro” resource manual, “Tips for Success”, as a guide for further reflection and reference.

Chicanos Por La Causa continues its commitment and promise to opportunity for the Latino community through the CPLC Career Development Institute.

“Lo que bien se aprende nunca se olvida”
